A heavy blooming selection from Pt. Sal, north of Santa Barbara. In youth it's rather low growing but in time can grow to as much as 10 feet tall and 15 wide.

Salvia spathacea.  Hummingbird Sage   
This aromatic perennial grows wild along the coast from Orange County to San Francisco, where it thrives on exposed north-facing slopes and in the dry duff under oaks. Creeps from a rhizome, sends up arrow-shaped leaves with the most delicious fragrance of any sage and robust pink blossoms that attract hummingbirds. Salvia 'Allen Chickering'  Allen Chickering's Sage   
The favorite S. clevlandii hybrid of Nevin Smith and other discerning horticulturalists, Allen Chickering grows at least 4 ft. tall by 6 ft. wide with a bounty of blossoms in brilliant blue.

Salvia 'Pozo Blue'  Pozo Blue Musk Sage   
A delectable hybrid of Salvia clevelandii and leucophylla, Pozo Blue grows 3 to 4 feet with deep blue flowers and silvery drought tolerant fragrant leaves. Sort of half way between Winifred Gilman and Allen Chickering.

Salvia brandegei  Brandegee Sage  Santa Rosa Island 
Similar to our local Salvia mellifera (Black Sage) but with smaller green leaves and beautiful blue flowers; also has a very pleasant citrus like sent.

Salvia clevelandii  Cleveland's sage   
An upright evergreen shrub to 3 or 4 feet, with silvery-green leaves and a showy blue flower display in summer, this drought-tolerant hummingbird magnet was named for the western botanist Daniel Cleveland, not for the city in Ohio. The wonderful fragrance of its foliage hits you at twenty paces.

Salvia mellifera 'Terra Seca'  Black sage  Monterey Co. 
Mounding to 14 inches and trailing over walls to 6 feet with a blue flower. Salvia melifera is the most common Bay Area sage, normally making an upright chaparral shrub with pale flowers - this compact selection with colorful flowers is from the vicinity of Big Sur Lighthouse.
