Asclepias fascicularis  Narrowleaf Milkweed   
Delicate narrow leaves and fairly neat appearance. Tolerates shade. Habitat plant for the larvae of the monarch butterfly. Herbaceous perennial that dies back in Fall after flowering. (1’-2.5’ tall) Flowers range from pale pink to purple, or white in June-September Deadhead flowers to prolong bloom period. Full sun, low water, high drought tol., clay soils and moderate slopes ok.

Asclepias speciosa  Showy Milkweed   
A stout, hairy, deciduous perennial with big leaves, very different from the Narrowleaf, also a longer bloomer (1-3’x2’) Star-like pinkish flowers at the top of erect flower stems (Summer-Fall) Full sun, likes a little more water than Narrowleaf, but can tolerate more sun and heat, most soils ok Monarch host plant, hummingbird favorite. Dormant in Fall.
