Aquilegia

Native Perennials

Aquilegia eximia  Serpentine Columbine
Serpentine Columbine is a slightly more hardy species than the local Western Columbine, A. formosa; this one tolerates poor soils (clay, serpentine) and drought, so is easier to grow, but prefers a bit more moisture. Rarer to find and can sometimes grow to be 5'. Their spectacular flowers are one to behold, red crown shaped petals with extra long golden stamens gently dangling beneath them (Summer).

Aquilegia formosa  Columbine
Classic Western Columbine, truly a gorgeous plant for early summer hummingbird fodder. Forms several erect, branched stems; 1 to 3 ft. high. Moist wooded areas. Sun to shade. Native to San Francisco and greater Bay Area. Snails also love it, alas. Extract of the root was used by Natives to enhance energy and stamina.
